What drivers need to know about ethanol blends, compatibility and long-term engine health

If you’ve filled up your car in the past couple of years, you’ll probably have noticed two different petrol options at the pump: E10 and E5. But what do they actually mean? And more importantly, which one should you be using?

Since E10 became the UK’s standard petrol in 2021, many drivers have wondered whether it’s safe for their older vehicles, whether it affects performance and whether it’s worth paying extra for E5.

Here’s a simple guide from D&G Autocare to help you choose the right fuel for your car.

What Do E10 and E5 Actually Mean?

The names simply refer to the amount of ethanol in the petrol.

E10 = up to 10% ethanol

E5 = up to 5% ethanol

Ethanol is an alcohol made from plants such as sugarcane and grains. It’s renewable and helps reduce carbon emissions, but it behaves slightly differently from pure petrol.

Why Did the UK Switch to E10?

The main reason is lower CO₂ emissions.

By increasing the ethanol content from 5% to 10%, the UK can reduce carbon emissions from petrol vehicles by an estimated 750,000 tonnes per year — equivalent to taking around 350,000 cars off the road.

E10 is now the standard 95-octane petrol at most filling stations.

Is E10 Safe for Your Car?

For most drivers, yes.

Around 95% of petrol cars on UK roads can safely run on E10 without any issues, including:

  • Almost all cars built after 2011
  • Most models from 2000–2011
  • Many earlier vehicles depending on manufacturer

However, some older cars — particularly classic vehicles or early fuel-injection models — are not compatible with higher ethanol blends.

❗ If your car is one of these, you should use E5 (Super Unleaded) instead.

To check, you can use the government’s compatibility tool or ask your local D&G Autocare team.

What Problems Can Ethanol Cause?

While E10 is safe for most vehicles, ethanol has some characteristics worth knowing:

1. It absorbs moisture

Over time, this can lead to:

  • condensation in the fuel system
  • corrosion in older metal tanks
  • issues with rubber seals or hoses (mainly in older cars)

2. Slightly reduced fuel economy

Ethanol contains less energy than petrol, so some drivers notice a 1–3% drop in MPG. It’s usually small, but noticeable on long journeys.

3. Shorter fuel life

If you have a car that sits unused for weeks at a time, ethanol-blended fuel can start to separate. E5 tends to stay stable for longer in low-use vehicles.

Should I Use E5 Instead of E10?

E5 is usually a higher-octane fuel (97–99 RON), meaning:

  • better performance
  • improved engine smoothness
  • slightly better fuel economy
  • longer-term protection for older engines

It’s also the recommended fuel for:

  • classic cars
  • performance cars
  • motorcycles
  • cars that aren’t driven regularly
  • cars built before 2011 where compatibility is unclear

For most modern cars used daily, E10 is perfectly fine — but some drivers prefer E5 for its quality and engine care benefits.

Will Using the Wrong Fuel Damage My Car?

Using E10 once in a non-compatible car won’t cause immediate damage.
However, long-term use may lead to:

  • fuel leaks
  • hardened rubber seals
  • corrosion
  • starting issues
  • poor performance

If you accidentally use E10 in a car that needs E5, simply refill with the correct fuel next time.

If you notice any problems, D&G Autocare can run checks on fuel lines, seals, injectors and filters.

What If You Drive a Diesel?

You don’t need to worry — E5 and E10 apply to petrol only.
Diesel drivers should look for B7, which contains up to 7% biodiesel.

Which Fuel Should You Choose?

Here’s a quick summary:

Choose E10 if:

✔ Your car is 2011+
✔ You drive regularly
✔ You want the cheapest option
✔ You don’t notice any performance changes

Choose E5 if:

✔ Your car is older or a classic
✔ You want maximum performance
✔ Your car sits unused for long periods
✔ Your manufacturer recommends premium fuel
✔ You’ve experienced rough running on E10
