If your annual MOT test is coming up, a little preparation can go a long way in helping your vehicle pass the test first time. Many of the most common MOT failures are for simple issues that can be easily fixed ahead of time. In this guide, we’ll walk you through a quick and easy checklist to help get your car ready before heading to your local MOT garage.
1. Check Your Lights
Faulty lights are one of the top reasons cars fail their MOT. Before visiting the garage, inspect all the lights on your vehicle, including:
- Headlights (main and dipped beam)
- Brake lights
- Indicators
- Number plate lights
- Reverse and fog lights
Replace any broken bulbs and make sure all lights are clean and clearly visible.
2. Inspect Tyres and Tread Depth
Tyres must meet the legal minimum tread depth of 1.6mm across the central three-quarters of the tyre. Use a tread depth gauge or a 20p coin to check. Also look for signs of damage, such as cracks, bulges or excessive wear. A reputable MOT garage will check all four tyres—so it’s worth doing the same.
3. Top Up Essential Fluids
Your car needs enough fluid to safely complete the test. Make sure the following are topped up:
- Engine oil
- Brake fluid
- Windscreen washer fluid
- Coolant
Running low on any of these could result in a failed test or delays at the MOT garage.
4. Test the Horn and Windscreen Wipers
Your horn must be loud and clear enough to alert other road users. Windscreen wipers should work effectively and be free from tears or splits. Replace any worn blades before booking in with your MOT garage.
5. Check Seatbelts and Mirrors
Inspect all seatbelts for damage and test they fasten securely. Your car must also have a working rear-view mirror and at least one wing mirror in good condition. If anything’s cracked or loose, fix it before the test.
6. Make Sure Your Number Plate Is Legal and Clean
A dirty or non-standard number plate can result in a fail. Give it a quick clean and check the plate is securely fastened and easy to read—especially if you’re heading to the MOT garage after driving on muddy or dusty roads.
