Pre-Road Trip Car Checklist
1. Check Your Tyres
- Tyre pressure: Inflate tyres to the manufacturer’s recommended level (check your handbook).
- Tread depth: Minimum legal depth is 1.6mm—but we recommend at least 3mm for long trips.
- Spare tyre: Make sure it’s inflated and usable, just in case.
2. Top Up Fluids
- Engine oil: Essential for smooth engine operation—top up or replace if needed.
- Coolant/antifreeze: Prevents overheating, especially in summer traffic.
- Brake fluid: Low levels could indicate a leak or worn brake pads.
- Windscreen washer fluid: Make sure it’s topped up with summer-friendly mix to tackle bugs and dirt.
3. Test Your Battery
- Hot weather can strain car batteries just as much as cold. If your battery is over 3 years old or struggling to start the engine, it might be time for a replacement.
4. Inspect Lights and Indicators
- Check all exterior lights are working properly—especially brake lights and headlights if you’ll be driving at night.
5. Ensure Your Air Conditioning Works
- Nothing spoils a summer trip like a sweltering car. If your air con isn’t blowing cold, it may need a re-gas or a filter clean.
6. Pack an Emergency Kit
- Suggested items: spare bulb kit, warning triangle, torch, high-vis vest, phone charger, first aid kit, and water.
