Lane assist is one of several driver assistance features now commonly fitted to modern cars. When it’s working normally, you may barely notice it. But when a warning suddenly appears saying ‘Lane Assist Unavailable’, or the system stops recognising road markings, it can leave you wondering whether something is wrong with your car.
At D&G Autocare, increasingly sophisticated cameras and sensors mean we’re seeing technology play a much bigger role in everyday vehicle maintenance and repairs.
So, why might your lane assist stop working, and when could it point to a problem that needs professional attention?
What Does Lane Assist Do?
Lane assist systems use information from cameras and other vehicle sensors to identify road markings and determine the position of your car within its lane.
Depending on the vehicle, the system may warn you if you begin to drift out of your lane or provide gentle steering assistance to help keep the car correctly positioned.
However, for the system to work properly, its cameras and sensors need a clear view of the road and, importantly, need to be correctly positioned.
Why Is My Lane Assist Not Working?
There isn’t one single reason why lane assist can stop working. Some causes are temporary and relatively straightforward, while others may require inspection or calibration.
The Camera Is Dirty or Obstructed
A simple place to start is the windscreen.
Many lane assist systems use a forward-facing camera positioned towards the top of the windscreen. Dirt, snow, ice or even heavy condensation around this area can restrict the camera’s view.
If your lane assist becomes unavailable, make sure the windscreen is clean and that nothing is obstructing the area around the camera.
Poor Weather or Road Conditions
Sometimes there’s nothing wrong with the vehicle at all.
Heavy rain, fog, snow or strong glare can make it more difficult for cameras to identify what’s ahead. Similarly, faded, damaged or temporarily altered road markings can prevent the system from determining the position of the lane.
You may therefore notice lane assist becoming temporarily unavailable in certain driving conditions before returning to normal later.
You’ve Recently Had Your Windscreen Replaced
A windscreen replacement can be more complicated on a modern vehicle than simply removing the old glass and fitting a new one.
If your car has a camera mounted around the windscreen, replacing the glass can affect the camera’s position. Depending on the vehicle manufacturer’s requirements, the camera may then need to be recalibrated.
If your lane assist warning appeared shortly after windscreen work, this is worth investigating.
Can Wheel Alignment Affect Lane Assist?
Potentially, yes.
Your car’s driver assistance systems need to understand the direction in which the vehicle is travelling. Changes to the vehicle’s geometry can therefore affect systems that rely on this information.
If you’ve recently had wheel alignment, steering or suspension work carried out and your lane assist has stopped behaving normally, the vehicle may need to be checked.
This doesn’t mean every wheel alignment automatically requires ADAS calibration. Requirements vary depending on the vehicle and the work carried out.
Can Suspension Repairs Affect Driver Assistance Systems?
Suspension work can alter aspects of the vehicle’s geometry, ride height or alignment.
On vehicles equipped with Advanced Driver Assistance Systems, certain repairs may therefore require the relevant cameras or sensors to be checked and, where specified by the manufacturer, recalibrated.
This is one reason modern vehicle repair increasingly involves more than simply replacing the damaged mechanical component.
What If My Lane Assist Stopped Working After a Bump?
Even relatively minor accident damage can be relevant.
Modern cars can have cameras, radar and other sensors positioned around the windscreen, bumpers and bodywork. Damage or repair work around these areas has the potential to affect the position of a sensor.
You may not be able to see anything obviously wrong from outside the vehicle.
If a driver assistance system begins behaving differently after an accident, pothole impact or repair, it’s sensible to have it investigated rather than assuming the warning will disappear.
Does My Lane Assist Need Recalibration?
Not necessarily.
If the problem is caused by a dirty windscreen, bad weather or unclear road markings, the system may return to normal once conditions improve.
However, ADAS calibration may need to be considered if a camera or sensor has been disturbed, or if work affecting the vehicle’s geometry has been carried out.
Situations where your vehicle’s requirements should be checked can include:
- Windscreen replacement
- Accident or body repairs
- Suspension repairs
- Wheel alignment
- Certain tyre changes
- Replacement or movement of ADAS cameras and sensors
The exact requirements differ between makes and models, which is why the correct manufacturer procedure should be followed.
What Should I Do If Lane Assist Keeps Switching Off?
If lane assist becomes unavailable once during particularly poor weather, there’s not necessarily anything wrong with your vehicle.
However, if the warning keeps returning, remains permanently illuminated, or the system has started behaving differently after repair work, it’s worth having the vehicle checked.
You should also pay attention to any other dashboard messages or driver assistance warnings appearing at the same time.
Lane assist and other driver assistance features are there to support you, not replace your own observation and control of the vehicle, so don’t rely on a system that you know isn’t operating normally.
Having Problems With Your Car’s Driver Assistance Systems?
Modern driver assistance technology depends on cameras, radar and sensors being able to accurately understand what’s happening around your vehicle.
If your lane assist has stopped working following a repair, windscreen replacement or change to the vehicle’s alignment, the system may require professional attention.
D&G Autocare offers ADAS adjustment and calibration for vehicles where these systems need to be checked or reset.
